Spray Patch
"A long-term study that began under the Strategic Highway Research Program, and continued under FHWA’s Long-term Pavement Preservation program, found that for patching potholes, quality of materials is more important than method or machine. The use of quality, even premium, materials is the utmost variable in effective pothole patching." - FHWA, Pavement Preservation Compendium II2
Effective Pavement Maintenance
Spray Patching is a very effective pavement maintenance treatment. Asphalt emulsion, aggregate and high volume air allow an operator to clean, tack and patch potholes quickly and easily. Special machines manufactured for this purpose use high volume air to blow out loose debris followed by asphalt emulsion tack. The aggregate and emulsion is then blended as it is sprayed into the pothole. If potholes are not properly repaired, they serve as a direct entry for water into the pavement structure. This moisture can strip asphalt binder off of the aggregates, destabilizing the mix. If left untreated, the water will wash away the underlying base structure, destroying the load bearing capabilities and requiring expensive total reconstruction.

Spray Patch Benefits
- Repairing the potholes prevents water from entering the base and further weakening the pavement structure.
- Unrepaired potholes are a safety hazard for motorists, and they result in high vehicle operating costs.
- The spray equipment allows thorough cleaning of the pothole, essential to effectively bonded repairs.
- The rapid setting water-based emulsions adhere to damp surfaces, firmly binding the aggregate and bonding the patch to the pavement.
