Pavement Construction

Pavement Construction

“We were not a wealthy Nation when we began improving our highways, but the roads themselves helped us create a new wealth, in business and industry and land values. So it was not our wealth that made our highways possible. Rather, it was our highways that made our wealth possible.” - Thomas H. MacDonald, Chief of the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads

Our Road System – Our Lifeline

The Interstate system, city streets and farm to market roads all continue to be vital to our standard of living in transporting goods, services and ourselves.

Better Quality at Lower Life Cycle Cost

In the last 15 years, there have been major advances in the technology for asphalt road paving products. The $150 million federal Strategic Highway Research Project and other researchers have introduced performance specifications to reduce the risk of failures, improve quality and lower life cycle costs. The importance of tack in pavement structural strength, the quality of a performance-graded asphalt for hot mix asphalt, the use of asphalt emulsions for building strength into stabilized bases, and cost-effective cold mix technology for rural roads are just some of the methods for achieving these goals.

Martin Asphalt Makes It Easy

PG asphalt, tack emulsions, asphalt emulsions for cold mix, asphalt materials for dust control and priming pavements. Through Martin Asphalt, you get Everything Asphalt—a full range of products for your pavements. In addition, you receive technical assistance in selecting the right materials and application. The company's AASHTO Certified Laboratory makes sure the products meet your specifications. And your products are delivered both on spec and on time via Martin's Gulf Coast network of production plants, storage facilities and transportation fleet including ocean-going and inland barges, rail cars and tanker trucks.

Process Description Martin Asphalt
Products
Tack / Prime Emulsified asphalt or cutback asphalt sprayed on the existing surface before application of hot mix asphalt. The asphalt penetrates into the existing surface bonding the layers to increase structural strength and avoid delamination, pushing and shoving. SS-1

Hot Mix Asphalt Liquid asphalt mixed with well-graded aggregate in a hot mix plant, transported to the job site, placed by an asphalt paver and compacted. The liquid asphalt binds the rocks together in a strong but flexible pavement structure. PG 64-22 PG 70-22 PG 76-22
Emulsion Base Stabilization Emulsified asphalt or cutback asphalt blended with existing base material or new stone in-place to strengthen the base and prepare it for a new surface. AES-300

Cold and Warm Mix Asphalt Emulsified asphalt or cutback asphalt blended with aggregate warm at a hot mix plant, at a remote site in a portable pugmill, or in-place on the pavement. The emulsion mix is an economical alternative to hot mix asphalt, especially in remote locations. AES-300
